Spitting stone

Bremen – "Spuckstein"
This is an inconspicuous basalt stone that has been paved in the Cathedral courtyard across the northern side of the Cathedral. The stone has a cross on it and recalls the public execution of Gesche Margarethe Gottfried (1785 – 1831), a serial murderer from Bremen, who in the course of her murderous career poisoned 15 persons with arsenic. She later received the cynical sobriquet of “Angel of Bremen” There are two grisly explanations for the location of the “Spitting Stone”. According to the first explanation, it is the place where Gottfried was executed in 1831. The second explanation is that after the execution, Gottfried’s rolling head came to a halt there. Many Bremen citizens and tourists show their disgust for the murders by spitting on the stone.
